- The one star, family run Hotel Doni is five minute’s walk from St Mark’s Square, and despite its lowly star rating elicits very positive reviews on all Internet travel forums. By all reports the hotel is simple but clean, and some rooms have a view over canal, adding to the ambiance and comfort of being centrally located. Check about bathrooms – some rooms in the hotel don’t have en-suite facilities. You may be sacrificing the classic decor and the large breakfast but you’ll be staying at the best price in the most central location in Venice.
- You can’t get any closer to St Mark’s Square than Hotel Wildner, situated literally right next door to the Square. On top of that it has unlimited views of the Grand Canal as it opens up into the lagoon. For a two star hotel it’s quite pricey, but still a good deal cheaper than any higher starred accommodation will set you back.
