In Venice, cheap accommodation has also been seen as a bit of a myth. However if you’re prepared to forego the comforts of a hotel there are one or two places we can recommend. And yes, they’re CHEAP.
The Collegio Armeno Moorat Raphael is an art school that rents out rooms. It’s clientele are mostly students but other people are welcome too. Don’t expect much in the line of scenery, breakfast or a five star bath rooms but if you’re only sleeping over, what more do you want? You can book the Collegio here.
Venice convent accommodation: There’s a trend where more and more religious institutions – mainly convents – are offering accommodation to tourists. While they were still reasonably priced a few years ago, they now compete in the same price bracket as mid-range B&Bs and guest houses, and at the latter you’ll probably get a decent breakfast as part of your stay (My own experience is that convent breakfasts are the most basic ever, strictly coffee and croissants) . So you’re not gaining much financially by staying over in a convent, but it’s a unique experience, especially if you’re looking for a spiritual retreat or peaceful, quiet environment.
There are at least ten religious institutions in Venice offering accommodation, all in the range of about 100-150 Euro per double room. See monasterystays.com for details.
